Nonito Donaire casts away any doubt with TKO of Montiel

Nonito Donaire TKO 2 Fernando Montiel TIME: 2:25

Nonito Donaire is truly cemented as a pound for pound fighter after last night's destruction of Fernando Montiel. It was supposed to be a good match up of top contenders, with implications of a classic war. It ended up being a 2 round destruction, shocking many of the ringside observers. Nonito used his superior speed, and timing to catch Montiel with a perfect left hook. Fernando Montiel didn't have time to adjust as he was already taking big shots in the first. Montiel looked nothing like the champion he was. Donaire was just that much better, making short work of the Mexican native. When Montiel hit the canvas , you knew the fight was over. Somehow Montiel beat the count, only to take several more powerful blows before the referee stepped in. After the fight Donaire said he would like to unify the division. I personally would love to see him fight Anselmo Moreno, Joseph Agbeko, Abner Mares, or a super-fight in Japan against Koki Kemeda. If he can defeat everyone in his division the sky is the limit for this phenom. Names like Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Chris John are lurking in the wings in the featherweight division. It was an impressive, dominating win and I can't wait to see him in action again.

Is GSP The G.O.A.T. ??

For many fans the answer is still no because Georges has not finished an opponent for some time now. The fact of the matter is that he is the most well rounded athlete in the sport and decision victories or not, his victories are truly impressive displays of domination over very talented fighters. Anderson Silva, although one of the greatest of all time, has a hole in his game that GSP does not: wrestling.

Both GSP and Anderson have been in boring fights GSP cannot be blamed, as Anderson can, for failure to engage his opponent. Weather that is because of an inability to fight any other way than countering his foe or being overtly defensive is another conversation altogether.

GSP's domination and disfigurement of super-villain Josh Koscheck last night was a as dominant as his win over Kos stablemate Jon Fitch and both Kos and Fitch's faces both show the story of what it is like to go five rounds with a truly superior fighter.

So what then is the reason for GSP's lack of finishes as of late? Is it a safer game-plan employed by the Champion? Is it the fact that fighters challenging GSP are in the fight of their lives and have prepared for him like they have for no other? It has to be a bit of both and for that reason GSP may be the best P4P athlete in the sport, he is not the greatest of all time until he can match the impressive reigns of Anderson at his best or Fedor in his heyday, and he can do that by just finishing a fight on occasion.

What needs to happen now is a fight between the most dominant fighters in the UFC GSP vs Anderson Silva.

Important Questions About The UFC/WEC Merger

1. Ring Girls

Do we get to see an expanded roster of ring girls in future UFC events? Arianny Celeste holds it down for the crowd, but Chandella < WEC Ring Girls.

2. Nasal-y WEC Ring Announcer

Does this guy get a bone from the UFC once in a while? Highly unlikely, even if the Buffer is deathly ill. I see small regional shows and the unemployment line in his future.

3. Flyweights

The long rumored addition of a 125lb weight class in the WEC has been something fans, including myself, have been looking forward to for some time now. Now that the lighter guys are part of the UFC banner, is Flyweight on the back-burner indefinitely?

4. Commentary

I'm referring to the fact that one thing the WEC was good for was always having a fighter do commentary on fight cards. I liked hearing Frank Mir, Ken-flo, and even Bonnar's insights on the fights. Now that it's all UFC will these cameos dwindle for the status quo Goldy and Rogan duo?

Overall the merger is good for fight fans I think, as it will mean higher quality fight cards and more title fights for PPV broadcasts. As long as the UFC keeps Spike and Versus full of free events the fans and the fighters should benefit from the merger.

UPDATE: Dana White has stated that they are working on bringing the flyweights into the fold:
“Eventually we will do 125lbs. I believe we will open it up a lot sooner than people think we will. There are going to be more title fights in more places.”
