FRIDAY FOX SPORTSNET BOXING RESULTS

Beibut Shumenov W 12 Gabriel Campillo Split decision 117-111, 111-117, 113-115

This was supposed to be a good rematch between 2 good fighters but it ended in controversial decision. This was a classic match up of a crude puncher (Beibut Shumenov) and a slick boxer (Gabriel Campillo). They were talking up Shumenov from the start but from the beginning you could see the difference in skill. The young Kazakh threw very hard punches in the beginning of the bout but none really landed. He was tired in the middle rounds but showed heart for making it to the finish. I scored the fight 8 rounds to 4 (116-112) for Campillo, and the 4 rounds I gave Shumenov were very generous. Campillo picked off most of the power punches Beibut threw and countered all night with combinations. It even looked like Campillo would knock out Borat's neighbor but he had a tough chin. The score of 117-111 for Shumenov was equivalent to heresy and made me sick to my stomach. Even the score of 115-113 for Beibut was ridiculous because there is no way he could have even earned a draw. I'm so sick of these horrible decisions and the judges need to be held responsible. Boxing needs one governing body in the form of a commissioner like the NBA, MLB, NHL,and the NFL if we want to end the madness. Instead of going back to Spain and enjoying the one sided decision he so well deserved he is forced to fight him in a rubber match to gain back his belt. People always complain about American fighters going to Europe and getting a bogus decision but in this case it is reversed, what a way to spoil an American debut. The only thing that kept me calm when the decision came down was the yellow tint and regal voice of the Colonel Bob Sheridan. I definitely enjoyed watching and listening to him call the fights, he is entertaining.

Erislandy Lara TKO 10 Grady Brewer TIME: 2:44

There were 3 different fighters from the Contender series that were in action Friday night and the only one to lose was Grady Brewer. Even if Brewer would have made it to the final bell he would have lost a decision on the cards anyway. Lara was quicker and overall better then the veteran Brewer Friday night. He wasn't doing anything to fancy against Brewer but it was doing the trick anyway. The punch that sent Grady Brewer to the canvas in the final round was an some form of an uppercut that landed on his chin while he was bent over. Many will say it was a quick stoppage but his legs weren't under him and he was way behind anyway. The thing that stood out to me was the fact that Lara had Muay Thai trainer Master Toddy in his corner, but what ever works. Even with his extensive amateur background I think Lara is a little one dimensional and will have to show better offense if he wants to climb the ladder.
