Carlos Abregu (24-0, 21 KOs) VS Richard Gutierrez (21-2, 15 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: welterweight 147
BELTS: NA
WHERE: Arena Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico (SHOWTIME)
WHY: SHOWTIME has been putting together some good cards on Friday nights for us for some time now. Plus you get to see Carlos Abregu a good up and coming fighter going against another decent guy in Guiterrez. I want to tune in and see if Carlos will win and give David Estrada the rematch he deserves. Also on the under card you have an entertaining match up between Marquez and Campos.
Jesse Brinkley (34-5, 22 KOs) VS Curtis Stevens (21-2, 15 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: super middleweight 168 lbs
BELTS: WBC USNBC Super Middleweight Title
WHERE:Grand Sierra Resort, Reno, Nevada (ESPN2)
WHY: This is another chance to take a look at Jesse Brinkley who got his fame from The Contender series. Since losing 2 straight fright to Joe Spina, and Robin Reid he has went on a 8 fight win streak. You also have to remember this fight is on ESPN2 so you get to see the great Teddy Atlas in action. The fight is also an IBF eliminator so the winner is one step closer in facing and losing to Lucian Bute. On the under card you get to see a 10 round welterweight attraction between Raymond Serrano and Ronnie Warrior Jr.
Gabriel Campillo (19-2, 6 KOs) VS Beibut Shumenov
WEIGHT CLASS: light heavyweight 175 lbs
BELTS: WBA World Light Heavyweight Title
WHERE: Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada (FOX SPORTS NET)
WHY: This fight is a REMATCH and usually as in this case the first fight was close and the second should be the same. The first fight was scored a majority decision 113-113, 114-113, and115-111 for Gabriel Campillo. Shumenov only has 9 pro fights under his belt but that didn't stop him from trying the first time. In those first 9 fights he has faced and beat a few good vets including Montell Griffin, Epifanio Mendoza, and Byron Mitchell. He is the pride of Chimkent, Kazakhstan and represented them in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The word on the street is he was Borat's neighbor growing up and that is why he took up boxing. Grady Brewer is on the under card of that card he will the 3rd Contender series fighter in action Friday night.
Vernon Paris (18-0, 13 KOs) VS Corey Alarcon (13-14, 4 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Jr welterweight 140
BELTS: NA
WHERE: Masonic Temple, Detroit, Michigan
WHY: Vernon is a good prospect who has triumphed through adversity, including a shooting and a stabbing. He is a fighter who is quick, has good power and likes to finish his opponents. The only problem with him is he needs to face better opposition if he wants to get respect and bigger fights. Carlos Linas puts together entertaining cards in Detroit and the Metro area. Also on the under card is Detroit native and undefeated super middleweight Darryl Cunningham.
Peter Manfredo Jr. (33-6, 18 KOs) VS Matt Vanda (42-9, 22 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: middleweight 168 lbs
BELTS: Vacant NABF Middleweight Title
WHERE: Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut
WHY: Peter is never in a dull fight and people love and remember this guy from The Contender series. This is his third fight since being blown out in 3 rounds by Sakio Bika.
Matt Remillard (20-0, 11 KOs) VS Rafael Lora (11-1, 5 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: featherweight 126
BELTS: NABF Featherweight Title
WHERE:Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut
WHY: Featherweights are highly entertaining to watch as seen last Saturday night. Lora and Remillard should bring some action to the Mohegan Sun and could steal the show.
Saturday January 30, 2010
Sebastian Sylvester (32-3, 15 KOs) VS Billy Lyell (21-7, 4 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: middleweight 160 lbs
BELTS: IBF Middleweight Title
WHERE:Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Germany
WHY:Sylvester is the IBF champ and is ranked 3rd best middleweight by the Ring. He won 3 straight since his one sided points loss to Felix Sturm. Karo Murat is also on the same card in Germany.
Jorge Arce 52-6-1, 40 KOs) VS Angky Angkota (23-4, 14 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Jr Bantamweight 115 lbs
BELTS: Vacant WBO jR. Bantamweight Title
WHERE: Restaurante Arroyo, Mexico City, Mexico (FOX SPORTSNET)
WHY: Jorge"Travieso" Arce has been one of the most entertaining fighters in boxing for along time. I first saw him when he was knocked out by one of my favorite fighters of all time Michael Carbajal in 1999. I have remained a fan since then because he goes for the gusto every time out. If you only watch one fight this week end I would make it this one.
