Jon "Bones" Jones: The Prospect That Vera Once Was

The excitement surrounding Jon Jones ,the hottest prospect in the 205lb division today, seems all too familiar to fans who witnessed the rise of Brandon Vera. Jones is wowing audiences with his exciting Greco-Roman wrestling prowess and unorthodox striking while working his way up the ladder in the UFC's stacked light-heavyweight division. Vera, who also has a Greco-Roman background, stormed through the heavyweights with an exciting style that had fans wanting to see more. Unfortunately for us, and Vera, he had a contract dispute with his management and the UFC that kept him out of the ring for an extended period of time and the Vera of old hasn't been seen since he returned.
Vera is still a solid fighter, but has never truly regained the momentum he had with wins against Assuerio Silva, Justin Eilers, and Frank Mir. Disappointment after disappointment followed fans as we watched the stink-fest between him and Tim Sylvia, lackluster losses to Keith Jardine and Randy Couture, and a win here and there against UFC newbies. On Sunday Vera will face the prospect Jon Jones and try to regain his footing on the track he fell off of on his way. For Jon Jones a win against Vera puts him another step towards the top of the division. It should be an exciting fight no matter which Brandon Vera shows up because of the exciting style that Jones will bring to the table, but if the Vera of old should happen to show up it will be an even better one.
