With Alves Sidelined, Saunders Steps In Against Fitch

Earlier the news broke that Thiago Alves was scratched from the rematch against Jon Fitch due to a CAT scan irregularity in his pre-fight medicals. Alves exact condition is unknown at this time but we wish him all the best and hope that it turns out to be nothing major. In the interim Ben Saunders, who was slated to face Jake Ellenberger at UFC 111, has been pitted against Fitch in an interesting match up of welterweights.
Saunders was the first man to ever stop Marcus Davis in his last outing and looked the best of his career. The fight gives Saunders a chance to climb the 170lb rankings even higher and gain a bit of redemption for losing to Fitch teammate Mike Swick at UFC 99 in Germany. Saunders did not look comfortable against Swick in the loss, and may have been a bit gun-shy because of the step up in competition and added spotlight of that fight. In his best performances against Brandon Wolff and Marcus Davis "Killa B" looked sensational and if that is the fighter that turns out against Fitch it should be a great fight. If Fitch decides to lay on top of Saunders and grind out another decision victory, well that wouldn't be too unexpected either.  The complete fight card for Saturday now looks like this:

Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Dan Hardy (for welterweight title)
