Michael Katsidis TKO 3 Kevin Mitchell TIME: 1:57
This was supposed to be a good match up, but Katsidis proved to be in a higher class. Although Mitchell was undefeated he was unproven against higher caliber fighters and failed in his step up. Most boxing writers thought Kevin Mitchell was the real deal. Its Too bad the young fighter lost on the biggest stage of his life. The fight took place at Upton Park Arena in front of a usually raucous British crowd. It can be distracting to fight in front of a hometown crowd, especially when its the biggest fight of your young career. That proved to be the case for Mitchell in his bid to beat the Ring's number 1 ranked lightweight. Katsidis brought his ferocious mauling style as soon as the first bell rang. The only thing the Brit could do is flee, and try not to get caught with a big punch. When an animal smells fear they attack. That is exactly what Katsidis did to his nervous foe while winning the first round. The second round saw Mitchell change the pace, and use his superior foot-work to out maneuver Katsidis. The Brit took the second round by landing a, jab, and catch Katsidis coming in with uppercuts. He would have to box that way for the rest of the fight with no mistakes to have a chance to win the fight. The beginning of the end came when Katsidis caught Mitchell with a left-hook that badly hurt him. He tried to hold on but was unable to. Katsidis followed him to the ropes and mauled him like a hungry lion rendering him unable to intelligently defend himself. Referee David Parris had no choice but to step in at 1:57 of the 3rd round to save Mitchell from any further punishment. The U.K. crowd who are known for backing their fighters and teams were rendered speechless with their boy losing. For Mitchell it is back to the drawing board, and for Katsidis a dream match-up with Juan Manuel Marquez.
