Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. W 12 John Duddy SCORES: 120-108, 117-111, 116-112 Vacant WBC Silver middleweight belt
Chaves Jr. may have won a insignificant belt on Saturday night, but it was a huge win in his career. John Duddy was no pushover or easy opponent, he came to win. This fight marks the first significant win over a decent contender. Chavez out boxed, and beat Duddy to the punch all night long. He seemed quicker, sharper, and stronger then he has in the past. I'm not sure what brought this out of him. Was it because he was facing a tough opponent? Could it be, he was sick of all the negative media coverage? Or, was it the recent hiring of trainer Freddie Roach, and Strength and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza. What ever it was it worked in his behalf, because he looked good. He had his way with his Irish foe, when ever he wanted. Duddy was not all bad as he looked OK in spots. He even rocked Chavez Jr. to his core with a hard shot in the 6Th. Every time it looked like Duddy was going to try to take control of the fight, Chavez stopped it. Chavez dictated the pace, and fought his fight, while Duddy struggled to keep up. Many were just looking to see if he could compete, and win against a higher caliber opponent. I wanted to see what would happen when he was faced with a little adversity. Or how he would react to an opponent who wouldn't just lay down. He would faced both in the tough Irishman John Duddy. He was rocked in the 6Th, and he recovered and fought back. When Duddy took the fight to him, he brought it right back. If he can keep improving, learning, and fighting tougher competition he will have a bright future. You know how good it feels when your father gives you his praises, Imagine what he was feeling. Chavez Sr. said " It was a great victory in my sons career. It was a great fight. He showed that he was a warrior in the ring. When talking of his son's future he said "I've always said that one day he would become a world champion". I think he has a lot of work to do if he wants to become a world champion, but it seems now he is on the right track.
