Cornelius Bundrage TKO 5 Cory Spinks TIME: 1:28
Upset was in the air in St. Louis, and Bundrage capitalized by winning the IBF Jr. middleweight championship. Many people will remember K-9 from his Contender series fame. On Saturday night he proved he is a real fighter. It is not easy to win when you are an underdog, and everyone thinks you will lose. Bundrage seemed anxious before the fight started, and it showed in the fight. He simply overwhelmed Spinks in the first round with his furious punching. Spinks had no chance to react as he was getting caught with big punches from the onset. It looked like he was seriously dazed and would possibly get knocked down in the first. The second was more of the same, with Bundrage a little more under control, and Spinks boxing more. You could tell who had the speed, and power advantage from the way Spinks was reacting to getting hit. Spinks tried to get his game plan in action, but Bundrage wouldn't allow him. In rounds 3 and 4 Spinks showed his boxing skill, but Bundrage has consistently landing the harder more effective shots. In the 5Th Bundrage inflicted an all out assault on the St. Louis champion. He was punishing him and sent him crashing to the ropes, as he almost fell out of the ring. When he got up he was taking a ton of punishment against the ropes, and looked to be seriously hurt. Spinks didn't punch back and was continuing to take a tremendous amount of punishment. Referee Mark Nelson Called a halt to the bout at 1:28 of the 5Th round. Spinks complained he wasn't hurt, and was able to continue. Spinks didn't look like a fighter arguing to keep fighting. He looked more like a drunk who was trying to convince a bar keep for another drink. The stoppage was 100% totally justified in my mind. Cornelious Bundrage gas come along way from his Contender days, and the victory was well deserved. He has relied on his hard training, great work ethic, and most importantly his strong faith in God. Bundrage was ecstatic after his victory, and stated, "I knew I was going to get him. It was just a matter of time". Now that he has won this title he has many more dorrs open to him.
