GUILLERMO JONES FOLLOWING THE CRUISERWEIGHT DREAM MOVING TO HEAVYWEIGHT

Guillermo Jones TKO 11 Valery Brudov TIME: 2:16

Jones has been a fixture in the cruiserweight division for some time now. He is a 2 time cruiserweight world champion winning the WBO, and the WBA world titles. He has beat plenty of good names in the division as well including Wayne Braithwaite, Firat Arslan, and Kelvin Davis. He also lost to the number 1 rated Steve Cunningham by split decision. Guillermo's October 2nd win was his first activity in two years. Many people thought he would lose to the slitly more active Russian, Brundov after such a long lay off. Jones used his height to fend off the the worthy challenger. He counter punched him as he tried to get inside. He sliced up Brudov's face with lacerations. The fight was called to a halt at the 21:16 mark of the 11Th round, due to a cut over the Russian's left eye. He looked sluggish while trig to shake the ring rust off during the early rounds but found himself mid way through. If he can keep busy he may be someone to watch, at least for fun. Foreshadowing his move to heavyweight, He called out the WBA heavyweight champion David Haye after his victory, foreshadowing his move to heavyweight. Because of his popularity among fans and fighters Haye can fight about anyone from either the heavyweight, and cruiserweight divisions right now. Guillermo is a long shot right now to land that fight, because there are so many in front of him that deserve it more. I can see King billing this fight "Little Big Men". They both moved up to heavyweight from lower weight classes, Jones all the way from welterweight. Jones like his Panamanian idol (Roberto Duran) before him who has also made the transition to heavyweight. As crazy as a match up as it sounds, and the way Haye picks his opponents maybe he has a better shot at landing that huge fight than we think.
