Important Questions About The UFC/WEC Merger

1. Ring Girls

Do we get to see an expanded roster of ring girls in future UFC events? Arianny Celeste holds it down for the crowd, but Chandella < WEC Ring Girls.

2. Nasal-y WEC Ring Announcer

Does this guy get a bone from the UFC once in a while? Highly unlikely, even if the Buffer is deathly ill. I see small regional shows and the unemployment line in his future.

3. Flyweights

The long rumored addition of a 125lb weight class in the WEC has been something fans, including myself, have been looking forward to for some time now. Now that the lighter guys are part of the UFC banner, is Flyweight on the back-burner indefinitely?

4. Commentary

I'm referring to the fact that one thing the WEC was good for was always having a fighter do commentary on fight cards. I liked hearing Frank Mir, Ken-flo, and even Bonnar's insights on the fights. Now that it's all UFC will these cameos dwindle for the status quo Goldy and Rogan duo?

Overall the merger is good for fight fans I think, as it will mean higher quality fight cards and more title fights for PPV broadcasts. As long as the UFC keeps Spike and Versus full of free events the fans and the fighters should benefit from the merger.

UPDATE: Dana White has stated that they are working on bringing the flyweights into the fold:
“Eventually we will do 125lbs. I believe we will open it up a lot sooner than people think we will. There are going to be more title fights in more places.”
Big up ME

Urijah Faber: The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttchin

In the WEC's first ever pay-per-view offering Urijah Faber revisits his role as challenger to the Featherweight crown opposite the berserker Champion Jose Aldo. For Aldo's part in this movie is that of father time with whom Faber is battling against to regain his long held spot of Champion and face of the WEC. Faber ruled the division, largely unchallenged, until he spun his way into a hook courtesy of ATT product Mike Thomas Brown. Prior to his meeting with Brown's fist Faber ran through the likes of Jeff Curran, Dominick Cruz, and the legend Jens Pulver. Faber had his second go at the now ex-champion Mike Brown and was unsuccessful in a valiant effort in which he broke both of his hands something serious. Now coming off of one of his biggest wins with a masterful performance against Raphael Assuncao in January puts him in the number one contender spot once again.

The task at hand for Faber is no small feat as Jose Aldo has blasted through every one of his opponents in the WEC with relative ease. Aldo has been nothing short of a whirlwind of violence in his time with the promotion dominating opponents with superior speed and accuracy on the feet never having to showcase his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Faber is one of the only fighters at 145lbs that might be able to match Jose's speed and explosiveness, but that still remains to be seen. Aldo was able to overwhelm the former Champion Mike Brown with strikes, something Faber was unable to do twice with the same opponent. If we have learned one thing from MMA it is that MMA math never quite adds up the way you think it should, so even if a common opponent is shared by the two it does not equal victory one way or the other.

Aldo has one loss on his record way back in 2005 that ended via rear naked choke, something Faber is very proficient at both applying and escaping. If the fight goes to the floor and Faber has the opportunity to apply the choke, the chink in Aldo's armor may be revealed. I am guessing that Aldo has finely sharpened his weapons since his lone defeat but Faber's team may look to the loss as a blueprint, however faded it may be, to dethrone the Champion. Urijah looks to have regained some of his Championship swagger in the ring, not that he ever really lost his mojo, and that could be trouble for anyone at 145lbs. Urijah is going backwards through the ranks it seems, going from seasoned vet holding a major belt to hungry challenger with title aspirations. If Aldo doesn't bring his A game it may be back to the top for "The California Kid" with Amp energy drink in hand.

WEC Ratings Dip Could Signal Trouble For First PPV

A night filled with action packed fights on the Versus network this past weekend was highlighted by dominant performances by Joseph Benavidez and newly minted Champion Dominick Cruz as well as the emotional retirement announcement from Jens Pulver. Unfortunately for these warriors the ratings for the show dipped to 42% lower than that of the last WEC show on Versus making it the second smallest viewership in the last two years of programming according to MMAjunkie.com. The card was not short on star power as it showcased the return of Miguel Torres and Jens Pulver as well as a title fight in the bantamweight division. That apparently wasn't enough and that does not bode well for the company looking to air it's first ever pay-per-view card in April at WEC 48. Now a significant number of viewers who subscribe to DirectTV still do not have access to the station thanks to a contractual beef between the network and the satellite carrier. That amounts to around 18 million subscribers that could not tune in if they wanted to.
The company's golden boy Urijah Faber is set to headline the pay-per-view broadcast challenging Jose Aldo for the title, so there may be light at the end of the tunnel. However, with the price tag of $44.95 attached to it, lots of fans are opting out of purchasing the fight. This is unfortunate for the fighters who get a cut of the PPV buys and probably look to make a significant amount more money than the Versus aired telecasts. For a card put on by The WEC to carry that high of a price tag right from the start may be too much to ask of fans for a live event that can regularly be seen on cable television. Not to mention the fact that most MMA fans are trying to keep up with the plethora of UFC events that are broadcast nearly every month with that same price tag. In my opinion what needs to happen now is the WEC PPV price needs to be lowered until they can get people used to the idea of paying for the shows as well as having The UFC put on more free shows rather than PPV to let the little guys in the WEC shine.
The WEC is consistently putting on amazing shows packed full of the best talent south of 155lbs and if anyone deserves the extra cheese its them. As of right now the PPV market seems to saturated with MMA programming to sustain another show regularly, but we wont know for sure until the numbers come back from WEC 48.

Miguel Torres: The Trials and Tribulations of a Prize Fighter

(Ouch)
Miguel Torres is having a rough stretch in facing the best 135lb fighters in the world coming off of his second loss in a row. I have nothing against Joseph Benavidez, but I cursed his name repeatedly when he split Miguel open and choked him out. I congratulate Benavidez for shining in his biggest fight aside from newly crowned champion Dominick Cruz. It was however tough to see one of my favorite fighters handily beaten for the second outing in as many fights.
Can Miguel regain prominence in the class that he was predicted to rule for the foreseeable future? Torres looked tentative and did not attack fearlessly as he did to get him to the top of the bantamweight food chain and it looks as though the loss may have affected him more so than first thought. Miguel was qouted as saying that he was attempting to fight more like Machida and less like Wanderlei. It was uncharacteristic of Torres though to fight that way and it may have cost him the fight.
A knockout loss can sometimes make a fighter question his chin and render him unable to pull the trigger as he once had. That may not be the case for Torres. Two of the best at 135 in a row is a tall order for a fighter, even one who held mythical status just two fights ago. Torres did everything right leading up to the fight as he changed up his training and worked with different coaches. He got rid of the rif-raf in his camp and got down to business. The only true measure of how Miguel will come back from this is his next fight. For fans of the mulleted one hope remains high that he will again be a top competitor, if not champion, in the bantamweight division.

Torres Won't Get A Warm Up Fight On His Way Back To The Top

WEC Fighter Miguel Torres was on nearly everyone's pound for pound greatest lists before his encounter with Mark Whalburg lookalike Brian Bowles. No one gave much thought to Bowles as someone who could contend, let alone beat the Champion. Torres has stated that he was caught up in his own press clippings and doing so much PR work for the promotion that he was believing that sentiment as well. After the first KO loss of his career at the hands of Bowles, Miguel got rid of the "yes men" in his camp and went to work like he should have done in preparation for Brian Bowles. Can Miguel reclaim his dominance atop the 135lb division after such a devastating loss? Myself and many others believe that he can and will do just that. In his quest back to the top of the heap he doesn't have the luxury of a "Tune up" fight as he draws Urijah Faber Protégé Joseph Benavidez in his first trip back to the cage. Benevidas has only suffered one defeat in his Pro MMA career so far and has never been stopped in 12 professional appearances. Benavidez's only defeat came from a unanimous decision loss to co-headliner and challenger to Bowles for the title, Dominick Cruz. Oddly enough, Cruz's only defeat had come from Urijah Faber in the 145lb class that he dropped weight from. Somehow or another Faber is involved, six degrees of separation? With Faber it may only be four! Benavidas brings an energizer bunny-like pace to the fight which should make for an entertaining night for the fans in attendance and watching at home. Torres has made clear his intentions to get past Benavidas as he has enlisted Robert Drysdale to hone his already pristine jujitsu skill-set and has even gotten some time with former Champion boxer Miguel Cotto for help on throwing hands with more effectiveness. This should be a brawl for the ages and one that will most definitely put the winner up to face the Champion. If Torres comes out victorious he can reemerge as the king of the Bantamweight division and cement his spot among the pound-for-pound greats.

The full WEC 47 fight card is listed below and you can catch it live on Versus March 6th:

WEC 46 Results: Benson Henderson Taps Varner To Unify Lightweight Titles

After a slow start in their Lightweight Title fight Benson Henderson tapped out Varner with a Guillotine choke in the third round in 2:41. Ben Henderson is now the undisputed WEC Champ after the victory and potentially sets up a rematch with Donald Cerrone. Varner was as classy in defeat as he is in victory as he said post-fight that he came to fight and Ben Henderson wanted to kick and grapple and he wanted to box. "I came to fight, he came to grapple, two different things" Although Henderson could have been more aggressive in his attack he clearly did what he had to do to win the fight. Varner, a perennial crowd favorite, continues to woo the fans with his in and out of the ring antics and comments as he will go down as one of the most beloved Champions to grace the cage /sarcasm. The full results are below:

Will Campuzano def. Coty "Ox" Wheeler via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 20-27)
Eddie Wineland def. George Roop via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

WEC 46: Faber Earns His Shot at The Title

Urijah Faber impressed in his victory over the tough competitor, Raphael Assuncao in WEC 46's Co-Main Event. faber was too quick for Raphael and put the Brazilian in many precarious positions throughout the fight. Faber was able to drop him with his hands on several occasions proving that the grotesque looking broken hands are completely healed. Faber out worked Raphael in every aspect of the game ending the contest in the third round via rear naked choke to get the tapout and cement his spot in the 145lb title picture. Urijah enjoyed a raucous Sacramento California crowd and was greeted by the Champion Jose Aldo who stated that he respects Faber, but that there was no way he was taking his belt. It will be an interesting match for the phenom Jose Aldo who has smoked every other challenger in the WEC ranks thus far.

"The Prince of Persia" Defeats Dave Jansen at WEC 46

Dave Jansen was not able to continue his undefeated streak against the Iranian wrestler Kamal Shalorus. Shalorus, an undefeated fighter himself, won the bout with his superior wrestling whcich he used to keep the fight standing mostly, his strong chin, and wild boxing. It was not pretty when it came to the hands, as Shalorus threw punches like he was throwing fastball pitches at an MLB game, but it was effective as he bloodied and bruised jansen throughout. "The Price of Persia" was able to shrug off any take down attempts from Jansen and keep battering him with wild punches and take downs that were executed so well that it looked absolutely effortless. Kamal walks away with a unanimous decision victory in his second WEC appearance. Shalorus is way to rough in his stand up, but is able to get away with it due to his iron chin and supreme wrestling ability, but he will need to work hard on his boxing as he climbs the ranks of the 155lb division.

WEC 46 Results: Mike Brown Makes a Triumphant Return

(Which way to the beach ladies?)
The former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown made a victorious return to action at WEC 46. Brown took on relatively unknown commodity Anthony Morrison in his first trip to the ring since losing to Jose Aldo, and did so in impressive fashion as he finished his opponent at 3:07 of the first round with a rear naked choke. Brown looks great in his anticipated return to action and showed what many thought going in that Anthony Morrison was just not in the same league as the 145lb powerhouse Mike Thomas Brown. Mike announced his intentions of getting another crack at the 145lb king after the winner of Assuncao/Faber is determined.

Hermes Franca Says Goodbye To MMA Competition

Farewell goes out to the veteran Hermes Franca as he calls a halt to professional mixed martial arts competition after a loss to Eric Wisely at a MaxFights event in Des Moines, Iowa. Franca was always a competitive fight for anyone he faced in the cage. He has wins over some of the game's elite such as Jamie Varner, Mike Brown, Nate Diaz, and Caol Uno to name a few. Hermes cites his body's inability to keep up with the physical demands of the sport at an elite level after years of competing against some of the best fighters. Franca plans on focusing on his school and training other fighters to keep him busy as well as spending some much needed time with his family. Hermes had this to say about his retirement:

"The fans gave me the passion and strength that kept me competing at the championship levels for all these years. Without them, I couldn’t have done it. I owe it all to the fans"
Here is a highlight reel of the former WEC Champion, Jiu-Jitsu ace, UFC title challenger, and master of colorful hair dye:

Weekend/Beginning Preview: WEC 46 & UFC Fight Night

This weekend is packed with good fights on Versus with WEC 46 and we also get to start the week out right with UFC Fight Night: Maynard vs Diaz. WEC 46 features a Lightweight Title Unification bout between Champion Jamie Varner and Interim Champion Benson Henderson. Henderson won his Interim strap via a hard fought decision against Donald Cerrone while Varner was out with an Injury. Unless Varner is able to KO Henderson on the feet I don't see him being able to deal with the heart of Henderson. The card is stacked with exciting match-ups with two current Champions and two former Champions set to compete. Mike Brown looks to rebound from his loss to Jose Aldo facing newcomer to the WEC Anthony "Cheesesteak" Morrison. If it were the battle of monikers "Cheesesteak" woud win hands down. Also fighting for number one contendership is Urijah Faber against Raphael Assuncao. The full card and showtime is below:

WEC 46 Varner vs Henderson
Jan-10-2010 9:00 PM ET on VERSUS
MAIN CARD
Champ Jamie Varner vs. interim champ Benson Henderson (to unify lightweight title)
Raphael Assuncao vs. Urijah Faber
Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus
Mike Brown vs. Anthony Morrison
Mackens Semerzier vs. Deividas Taurosevicius
PRELIMINARY CARD
Akitoshi Tamura vs. Charlie Valencia
Bryan Caraway vs. Mark Hominick
Wagnney Fabiano vs. Clint Godfrey
George Roop vs. Eddie Wineland
Will Campuzano vs. Coty Wheeler

This card is interesting in that if Maynard is able to best the submission ace Nate Diaz he is more than likely in the conversation for the next shot at BJ Penn. I see another fight where Maynard is going to use his wrestling to bully Diaz around the ring en route to a decision win, but I would like to see Diaz pull another come from behind submission win. Hencho En Mexico Efrain Escudero returns against the tough young gun Evan Dunham. Dunham is good, but Esudero is better and it looks to me that he will take this one after a good battle with Dunham.

UFC Fight Night: Maynard vs Diaz
Jan-11-2010 9PM EST on SPIKE TV
MAIN CARD
Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard
Evan Dunham vs. Efrain Escudero
Tom Lawlor vs. Aaron Simpson

Chris Leben vs. Jay Silva
Jesse Lennox vs. Rick Story
Nik Lentz vs. Thiago Tavares
Mike Guymon vs. Rory MacDonald

Ed Ratcliff: Another Karate Based Fighter Making His Mark in MMA

Ed "9mm" Ratcliff started training in Karate as a young boy under the tutelage his mother. Ratcliff had a stellar run in his career until he ran into a roadblock named Marcus Hicks. Hicks overpowered Ratcliff in the wrestling game and finished him via submission. Before that Ratcliff had won his first six professional bouts finsihing all of his opponents within the first two rounds. In his WEC debut he TKO'd the heavily favored Alex Karalexis and wowed the crowd with his unorthodox striking game. Ratcliff recently got back on the winning track in the WEC with his first decision in eight fights, a win over Phil Cardella in August. Ratcliff looks to build off of that momentum in his next fight against the always dangerous Donald Cerrone. Cerrone has a good striking game with some amazing Jiu Jitsu to go along with it. In Donald Cerrone Ratcliff will get what he wants in an opponent that will stand and trade with him to give him a chance to showcase his signature spinning hook kick as he calls it. Cerrone is not that great at one aspect of the game and that is in the wrestling department, so 9mm will more than likely be able to keep it standing if he so chooses. Ratcliff has tried for submissions in fights before and even finished an opponent via armbar, but he would do well not to test his ground game against Cerrone's Jiu Jitsu. With Karate schools abuzz from the rise of Lyoto Machida, Ed Ratcliff could be another name that gets people excited again about Karate in today's world of combat sports.
Ed Ratcliff faces Donald Cerrone this Saturday night on Versus from The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas. The full card is below:

MAIN CARD
Donald Cerrone vs. Ed Ratcliff
Chris Horodecki vs. Anthony Njokuani
Joseph Benavidez vs. Rani Yahya
Scott Jorgensen vs. Takeya Mizugaki
PRELIMINARY CARD
Bart Palaszewski vs. Anthony Pettis
Muhsin Corbbrey vs. Zach Micklewright
Chad George vs. John Hosman

Erik Koch vs. Jameel Massouh

Versus Ups Its MMA Game: WEC Fighters Could Reap The Benefits

Versus announced recently announced an extension to its agreement with Zuffa LLC to continue carrying the WEC. With the new agreement the WEC will run seven live WEC cards in addition to two live UFC cards on the network along with the normal WEC Wreckage shows. With the announcement that the UFC live events, previously exclusive to Spike TV, will air in addition to the WEC cards it could bring some new eyes to the network and the WEC. That is good news for the lighter weight fighters with the WEC who are struggling for recognition and better paydays than the WEC can currently offer them. A main event fighter who may be in the top-ten pound for pound will currently only receive the pay of a marginal fighter of a higher weight class whos name is attached to a UFC card rather than the WEC. With phenoms like Miguel Angel Torres and the explosive Jose Aldo on the roster these guys deserve the pay their larger counterparts are receiving.

Jose Aldo Dethrones the Champion Mike Brown

Jose Aldo dominated the Featherweight Championship bout with speed and precision. Mike Brown, one of the best wrestlers in the WEC, was unable to take Aldo to the mat due to his exceptional take-down defense.  The stoppage seemed a bit quick, but we heard no objection from Brown. Aldo had taken Brown to the ground and easily moved into mount, transitioned to Brown's back, and went for broke with punches to get the TKO in round two.

Complete results:

Jose Aldo def. Mike Brown via TKO (punches) - Round 2
Manny Gamburyan def. Leonard Garcia by unanimous decision
Karen Darabedyan def. Rob McCullough via split decision
Shane Roller def. Danny Castillo via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 3
Kamal Shalorus def. Will Kerr via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 1:26
L.C. Davis def. Diego Nunes via unanimous decision
Cub Swanson def. John Franchi via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 3
Antonio Banuelos def. Kenji Osawa via unanimous decision
Ricardo Lamas def. James Krause via unanimous decision
Frank Gomez def. Seth Dikun via unanimous decision

Wednesday Night Violence

Jose Aldo looks to dethrone the featherweight kingpin Mike Thomas Brown in tonight's WEC card on Versus. Aldo has been a freight train since he came to the WEC steamrolling his opposition. Aldo earned his shot at the title with a drubbing of tough featherweight Cub Swanson via a flurry of knees only 8 seconds into the bout. Mike Brown, the quintessential underdog, looks to build on the momentum he has built with two wins over the former Champ Urijah Faber and a dominating win over Leonard Garcia. Will Aldo's explosive style give the Champion fits, or will Mike Thomas's heavy hands and wrestling prowess be the answer to the Aldo freight train? Tune in tonight at 9PM EST to find out.

Ben Henderson Wins The Interim Strap Against Cerrone

Benson Henderson, A.K.A Mr. Fantastic, shows heart and insane flexibility in his close win against Donald Cerrone for the WEC Interim Lightweight Strap.  Benson was threatened with multiple submission attempts, but landed take down after takedown and gained superior position to land hard punches on Cerrone.  It was a very close fight, and exciting until the end. In winning the Interim Belt Henderson set up a unification bout between him and Jamie Varner.  The two Arizonan Champions both want the bout in Phoenix, although Varner seemed more interested in talking up Cerrone than about the fight with Henderson. The full results from the WEC card are below:
