PAUL WILLIAMS AND SERGIO MARTINEZ IN FIGHT OF THE YEAR

The two people that nobody wanted to fight fought each other last night and it became an instant classic. Paul Williams the most feared man in boxing had to fight for his life last night in order to get a close win. The fight was fought at such a brisk pace that I was tired just watching them. From the first round they wee throwing punches with reckless abandonment and trying to win at all costs. Paul Williams knocked down Sergio in the first, but it was more a case of bad balance. Martinez knocked down Williams in the first round as well, however that knockdown seriously hurt Williams. Like a real champ Williams had to adjust and show his heart and fight back if he wanted any chance of winning. All night long Martinez was landing his right hook and he buzzed Paul with it many times. Martinez won the first 3 rounds and was looking like he could even KO Paul, but that was not the case. Eventually after Paul began to throw his jab and get back to his fight plan he was able to adjust to Martinez's speed. Williams also punished Sergio with uppercuts and heavy punches of all varieties. Paul piled up a bunch of rounds in the middle rounds and then in the 9Th Sergio came back. The scores were 114-114, 115-113, and the crazy score of 119-110 which was totally out outlandish. If the fight was declared a draw or Martinez won by a couple points it would have been digestible. I saw the fight closer to the 115-113 score card in favor of Paul Williams. The rounds were tough to score because to had the volume, aggressive punching of Williams and the harder crisper effective punching of Martinez. However you saw the fight both fighters should be commended by their performances and even for taking the fight. I would love to see Williams VS. Martinez 2 and I know they are willing to fight each other. Even if they don't fight each other again right away I hope they can get big fights against other big names. A few questions were answered in this great fight last night about both fighters. The biggest question that was answered was, Sergio Martinez is for real and can fight with anyone in the business. The other big thing in this fight is that Paul Williams can have trouble with crafty, fast boxers. The other main thing we learned is that both fighters have tremendous heart.
