Edwin Valero TKO 6 Hector Velazquez Time 3:00
As always Valero had too much power for his opponent and it earned him another win. Valero is now 26-0, 26 KOs and still has that 100% KO rating and has successfully defended his WBC lightweight title. Hector proved to be a cagey veteran and caused a cuts on the bridge of Valero's nose and over his left eye. Hector was taking too many power shots and would not make it out of his corner for the seventh round. Hopefully the cuts Edwin suffered wont interfere with his February 6Th mandatory title defense against the fast rising Antonio DeMarco on Showtime.
Kelly Pavlik TKO 5 Miguel Espino Time 1:44
Miguel Espino was no Paul Williams and that was proved last night when the fight was stopped in the 5TH. There was no surprise that Pavlik was going to win by KO in his hometown of Youngstown OH. Probably the biggest surprise was the attendance of 3,409 in the 7,000 capacity arena. Even his hometown wouldn't come out to see Kelly fight, maybe it was the economy or maybe it is the fact he backed out of a big fight. Even in hard times and when Tommy Hearns was way past his prime I can remember seeing Detroiters pack venues. I couldn't imagine people not coming out to see Marvin Hagler or any other Middleweight champ in their home town. Then again Hearns and Hagler never ducked anyone and their fans appreciated that. Whats next for the middleweight champ? Hopefully he steps up to fight better fighters and doesn't pull out of those fights.
Humberto Soto W 12 Jesus Chavez unanimous decision 100-87, 100-87, 100-87
Usually when you have two tough fighters that have that Mexican pressure style the one with the better boxing skill will win. Soto took it to Chavez hoping he would wilt and fold under the pressure, but Chavez was there all night. Even though Soto won by unanimous decision Chavez put up a great fight and showed great will and determination. In the first round Chavez was sent down to the canvas in a flash knock down by Soto. The punch landed on the top of Chavez's head and put him down, he got up quick. Chavez lost points in the 5TH and the 8TH rounds for being too rough and low blows adding to the unanimous decision win for Soto. It seemed that Chavez's relentless style and will was getting to Soto because he seemed to begin to tire quite early. There were many moments in this fight that they were trading punches with each other. Soto was getting the better of the exchanges most of the time. Soto landing off of the ropes and Chavez tyring to make it an inside war made the fight entertaining. Chavez seemed hurt or buzzed at least a couple of times in the fight. It was the best fight on the card and I am looking forward to seeing Soto again either at super featherweight or at lightweight again. There are a ton of great match ups at lightweight for Soto including Katsidis, Funeka, or the winner of the Valero, DeMarco fight. It doesn't matter who he is matched up against at lightweight it is guaranteed to be an entertaining fight and I will be watching.
Sam Peter TKO 4 Gabe Brown Time 2:58
Sam Peter seemed to be frustrated with Gabe browns antics in the ring but the crowd did not. Brown amused the crowd by sticking out his chin and taking about 4 punches from the Nigerian. That is not the smartest move because Peter has so much punching power, but when your record is 18-12-4 I guess it does not matter. I don't see Sam Peter as a serious contender and I don't think he has anything but a punchers chance against the top of the division.
