ALEXANDER THE CONQUEROR

Devon Alexander TKO 8 Juan Urango TIME: 1:12

Devon Alexander could only dream of becoming a champion when growing up in the rough, North St. Louis Hyde Park neighborhood, and now it is a reality. The WBC Jr. Welterweight just added the IBF Title and is now a unified champion at only 23. He used a good jab and lateral movement to combat Urango's constant pressure. He was landing quick combinations, and a beautiful uppercut all night long. Urango was attacking and landed a number of right hooks wich seemed to have little effect on his determined young opponent. Alexander was more busy and was also beating Juan to the punch in almost every exchange. Urango was determined and applied his usual pressure, but he just didn't throw enough punches. Alexander said he wasn't hurt by any of Urango's punches but it looked to me that the body punches were bothering him. Every time Juan landed them he dropped his guard to avoid more punishment. By the time he was ready to follow it up Devon was already out of position. The end of the fight came in a hurry all of a sudden in the 8TH round. Urango swung wildly and Alexander hit him with a perfect uppercut as he came in and it sent him right to the canvas. Urango has a ton of heart so he came up swinging. He got caught again and was sent down for the second and final time of the fight. Urango got up but the referee waved off the fight. Alexander looked good and now the options are limitless for the 23 year old unified champion. The most logical choice would be a fight with WBO champ Tim Bradley, WBA champion Amir Khan. Ricky Hatton says he wants to come out of retirement and that could be a big money fight. Either way you look at it this kid is good and he is quickly rising to the top of the Jr. welterweight division. He will be a serious problem for anyone in the division, and to think he is only 23.
