TUF 10 Finale Preview: Slice vs. Alexander

(Will the Forehead or the Beard Prevail?)
For Kimbo Slice fans it must be disheartening to hear the talk coming from Kimbo in the press leading up to his 215lb catch-weight bout with slugger Houston Alexander. On a conference call he was quoted as saying that he is not feeling well and very moody because of the weight cut, a first for Slice, to 215lbs. When asked about his training at highly regarded camp American Top Team Kimbo said something to the effect of "It's been OK I guess." Not words you want to hear from the most famous street fighter of this era going in to a must-win type of fight. Slice has better technical boxing ability than Alexander, no doubt about it, but Houston has a vicious clinch game and brute wrestling ability to go along with it. Slice on the other hand has not progressed in other facets of his game as some would have hoped, he is still going to fight like he always has, and unless he has truly honed his wrestling and take-down defense while at ATT the way to beat him will always be to take him to the mat. Luckily for Kimbo, Houston Alexander looks as much like a turtle on his back as Slice does while on his. I don't think were going to see any flying arm bars or gogopalatas in this fight folks. What Kimbo has to do is keep the fight standing and avoid the clinch with Houston. If he does that Slice should have the edge in the Boxing and put "The Assassin" to sleep. For Houston the key will be to utilize leg kicks, said clinch game, and his wrestling to overwhelm Slice and get the TKO victory.  Most fans have dismissed these two guys at this point because of their high profile losses and one dimensional games, but the fact of the matter is this fight will be entertaining and at the end of the day what more can you ask for.

Nelson vs. Schaub For The TUF 10 Contract

James Mcsweeney stopped Matt Mitrione via guillotine choke to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. Marcus Jones stopped Darrill "Titties" Schoonover via vicious knockout after overwhelming him on the ground. Marcus looks phenomenal on the ground and is a dangerous guy on the mat. Roy Nelson overwhelmed James Mcsweeney on the ground via belly smother until he got James in the crucifix position to pound him out. Marcus Jones is a beast on the ground, but his stand-up is suspect. After getting the take down on Schaub and securing the mount, Schaub was able to buck Jones off to get back to his feet where he landed a big bomb on Jones and followed him to the ground to finish the job.

Was Houston's Rise a Fluke?

I'm not ready to dismiss Houston as a flash in the pan, but lets look at his fights thus far in the UFC.

Jardine
Jardine came in with no respect for Alexander, and got the shit knocked out of him for it. Had Jardine came out with his serious face on like he did against Liddell the result may very well have been different. On the other hand Houston showed resilience after getting rocked by Jardine and came back to just maul Jardine into the ground.

Sakara
This dude was a pro boxer, but he may very well have a glass chin. He doesn't have the greatest record with the UFC. On the flipside, this dude hits hard! We saw it against Leben in his last fight, and if Chris didn't have a rock for a head the dude would still be on queer street. So Houston can obviously handle some tough guys at LHW.

Thiago Silva
This guy is a beast and I cant fault anyone for losing to him. I have no doubts that he is one of the LHW Elite. Of course he exposed a hole in Houston's amrour that was glaringy big, his ground game. Houston is a good wrestler, and if he has been training Jiu Jitsu as hard as weve been told, who knows we could see him submitting folks in the future.

James Irvin
Irvin pulled some slick shit at UFN just like he did with Terry Martin, he faked the knee this time and followed with a right cross directly after the touch of gloves. This guy hits hard, and when healthy has the ability to do some damage at 205.

As a fan, I hope we see Houston rise to the top like everyone on the hype train originally envisioned. But, until I see more from him, I wont be surprised if he falls off even harder.

UFN 04/02/08 = Gangster!

The Ultimate Fight Night card for tomorrow on Spike TV has got me really excited. It is one of the most stakced cards in memory, and thanks to Fightlinker we have a three hour broadcast to look forward to! Yippee! Two of the most exciting fighters to come to the UFC light heavyweight division are on the card, Houston Alexander and Tim Boetsch. Houston kicks off the card against Irving, and Boetsch takes on Matt Hammill. If both come out victorious, or even if they dont, it would be a fireworks display for the ages! The card is as follows:

Preliminary Card

Tommy Speer (170) vs Anthony Johnson (169.5)
Roman Mitichyan (170.5) vs George Sotiropoulos (169.5)
Marcus Aurelio (154.5) vs Ryan Roberts (155.5)
Josh Neer (156) vs Din Thomas (155)
Clay Guida (156) vs Samy Schiavo (155)
Manvel Gamburyan (155.5) vs Jeff Cox (155)

Main Card

James Irvin (205) vs Houston Alexander (205)
Gray Maynard (155) vs Frankie Edgar (155.5)
