BOXING ON TV THIS WEEKEND

Saturday, November 28, 2009

Lucian Bute (23-0-0, 18 KOs) VS. Librado Andrade 28-2-0, 21 KOs)

WEIGHT CLASS: Super Middleweight 168lbs
BELTS: IBF Super Middleweight World Title
WHERE: (HBO) Pepsi Coliseum, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
WHY: This fight should be interesting because the first one ended in wild fashion with a late knockdown of Bute after he was up on the cards. He some how got up to his feet to beat the count, and get the win, many thought he was saved. This will draw a huge crowd in Quebec because they love Lucian Bute up Bute up there. This also has big effect on the Super Middleweight division and if Bute wins he would command the attention of the Super Six winner.

John Molina (18-0-0, 14 KOs) VS. Martin Honorio (25-4-1. 13 KOs)

WEIGHT CLASS: Lightweight 135lbs
BELTS: NA/
WHERE: (SHO) Pechanga Resort & Casino, Temecula, California
Why: John Molina is an up and coming fighter in the talent rich Lightweight division who is turning heads with his powerfull punching. No relation to John John Molina the Super Featherweight Champion but he still should be looked at so we can see where he goes.

Sunday, November 29, 2009

Koki Kameda (24-0-0, 14 KOs) VS. Daisuke Naito (35-2-3, 22 KOs)

WEIGHT CLASS: Flyweight 112lbs
BELTS: WBC Flyweight World Title
WHERE: Super Arena, Saitama, Japan
WHY: Huge Japanese boxing event, with big TV ratings to come, a chance to see the flashy, rising Japanese star step up to fight the champ. This bout has a revenge aspect to it because Daisuke Naito already beat Koki's brother Daiki Kameda, which has caused a rivalry.

BOXING WEEKEND REVIEW

Mikkel Kessler (42-1-0, 32 KOs) VS. Andre Ward (20-0-0, 13 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Super Middleweight 168lbs
BELTS: WBA Super Middleweight World Title
WHERE: Oakland, California on SHOWTIME

Andre Ward tech. W 11 Mikkel Kessler 98-92, 98-92, 97-93

This fight was easy for Andre Ward and that is saying something because he beat a decorated veteran. He now has the WBA Super Middle weight title to add to his Olympic gold and he also picks up 2 points in the super 6 tournament. I was not surprised that Ward won but I was surprised how easy it was for him.

Marcos Maidana (26-1-0, 25 KOs) VS. William Gonzales (22-3-0, 19 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Jr. Welterweight, 140lbs
BELTS: Interim WBA Jr. Welterweight World Title
WHERE: Sunchales, Argentina

Marcos Maidana KO 3 William Gonzales

Marcos Maidana picked up where he left off in his first fight since stopping upcoming prospect Victor Ortiz by knocking out William Gonzales. Now the interim WBA champion has put himself in prime position because he is now the mandatory defense for the winner of the Amir Khan Dimtriy Salita fight. If he displays the power he showed in the Gonzales fight and the heart and determination he showed in the Ortiz fight he could be a problem.

Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-1-1, 10 KOs) VS. Zsolt Erdei (30-0-0, 17 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Cruiserweight 200lbs.
BELTS: WBC Cruiserweight World Title
WHERE: Kiel, Germany

Zsolt Erdei W12 Giacobbe Fragomeni 114-114, 115-113, 115-113

Everyone that wanted to see Zsolt Erdei get beat because he didn't defend his 175 lb title against quality opponents or even attempt to unify them will have to wait. The new version of Sven Ottke who wouldn't fight anyone at 175 has moved up to cruiserweight and got a close decision against Giacobbe Fragomeni. Erdei used his boxing skill and movement to frustrate the Italian untill the middle rounds when it became a fight. It was nip and tuck at the end with both men having their moments only after Erdei began to tire. I was rooting for Zsolt to get knocked out but he didn't he eked out the decision. The only thing I now wonder is who he will duck at cruiser weight.

Jorge Barrios (48-4-1, 34 KOs) VS. Michael Lozada (33-5-1, 26 KOs)
WEIGHT CLASS: Lightweight 135lbs
BELTS: Vacant WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Title
WHERE: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Jorge Barrios TKO 5 Michael Lozada

Jorge Barrios is not going away quietly and has picked up his second win since being KOed by Rocky Juarez. People forget Barrios was in control for most of his fight against Rocky until he got KOed late. He always shows good power and fights hard and nothing was different in this fight as he got the Stoppage in the fifth. He didn't turn on the burners until the 4Th and when he did Lozada had no answer. The loud mouthed Argentinian adds another win and hopefully he can get a bigger fight soon because if anything else he is entertaining.

GREAT BOXING ON TV THIS WEEKEND

November 7Th

Chad Dawson vs. Glen Johnson

This is a great rematch that Dawson won the first time, I thought Johnson won. I am picking Johnson to win in what most people would call an upset to line up a third fight. In this fight you get to see a young, highly skilled phenom Chad Dawson try to show his speed and power to beat a man who wont go down easy. Glen Johnson will pressure Dawson smothering him trying to take his legs, and go for a KO. This fight will be on HBO at 9:30PM ET so be ready or record it.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Harry Joe Yorgey

Everybody knows El Perro and how ferocious he can be and how weak he looked against Kermit Cintron, which one will show up. Not too many people know Harry Joe Yorgey, but he is good. I know this because he knocked out Detroit representative and son of legend Ronald Hearns. This fight could go either way it Yorgey can box and move he can beat Angulo but if he can't he will be malled badly. Either way this should be an entertaining fight to watch as an under card bout on the Dawson/Johnson fight on HBO.

Nikolai Valuev vs. David Haye

This is truly a David vs. Goliath fight with the 7 ft Russian giant going up against the UK loudmouth and blown up cruiser weight David Haye. This is a slow lumbering giant with OK skills facing a very fast fighter with a mighty punch. This one is hard to pick, if Haye can hurt Valuev early and get him out of there he can win. If he can't he will be tired and possibly set up the big man for the KO. I know Haye will get exposed but will it happen against the giant probably not . Having said this I'm picking Haye in an ugly fight, I like to pick the smaller guy it makes the fight much more fun to watch. It can be a bad decision in Russia because anything can happen just ask "The Real Deal". Even if Haye wins he will get crushed by a number of heavyweights including The Klitschko brother which he is afraid of.

Also Wednesday on ESPN2 we have Jr lightweight Jason Litzau in action against Johnnie Edwards. This should be a fun fight to watch and all 10 rounds will be fought hard. On Saturday Joel Casamayor against Jason Davis, and Zab Judah is against Ubaldo Hernandez are back in action in the welterweight division. This could set up a fight between the two and it would also be fun to watch if it ever materialize.
